Pines normally operates as a street photographer in Sydney. So, when given the opportunity to take his talents to Europe, he rose. Over the course of months, he captured the life within these familiar yet distant cities, with his fly on the wall style. In particular, he loved shooting in Lyon, France.
In conversation, Pines detailed the layout of the city as being conducive to his creations, “It had a hill with a lookout and winding street up and down it. As well as a river running through the city on two sides with lots of opportunities to shoot around it.” This journey reinvigorated his practice. Pines’ shots dance between many styles, but his depictions of non-human subjects are particularly mesmerising. With these, he is able to ascend past looking and start seeing.
